Road Trip Asturias part I :: green, rain, and sea food.

The route part I. Madrid - Torrelaviejas - Comillas - Llanes...

We left on a Sunday so the roads were empty. The car was funny but great.

While Madrid was blue hot, driving in Castilla y Leon up north showed the first clouds.

Taking photos out of the car window, the arid, dessert-like stretches are in central Spain, while the green hills and mountains appear reaching the north.

Jamie turned out to be a great driver.
We had one coffee break and went straight for the coast.

We made a stop in Comillas, a beautiful little town just in Cantabria.

The first green and lush
view.

That evening we arrived in Llanes, Asturias, and ordered a dish of strangely looking creatures.
Percebes. A 'goose barnacle' with a curiously prehistorical look. In the Middle Ages it was believed that geese were the mature metamorphosis of the percebes. They have been handpicked from the rocks for 10.000 years, with great risk for the pickers: los percebeiros

So you eat the 'meat' that is inside of the grey jacket. You twist the top part off, which has the meat attached. It tastes like sea. Also we had our first bottle of sidra, which became a daily ritual.

After dinner in Llanes we went to sleep on the campsite (I accidentally wrote seep), there was quite some wind a drizzle, so it was a humid
sleep. Next morning we had a warm shower on the campsite and went into town for breakfast. And shoes.

It was hard to resist making a quick stop in Poo.

That morning we bought boots because we woke up surrounded by water.

Find us!

Another stop. Walking for hours by a beautiful stretch of coast.
Niembro, small flower covered streets, and silent beaches.

This rock formation we called: the dog.

We walked down to the beach and back up through another small road.

All plants held fine drops of rain. Precious, like jewels :: That would be the snake rocks.

After walking down, and maybe falling once, on the slippery stones downhill.

Trying some macro photos

The beach was covered in rounded pebbles of various pastel shades.

Walking back up.

And back in the car for the second part of the journey...
